What is the best height for a sofa?

I can depend on your physical height, and what feels comfortable to you, but as a rule of thumb about 40cm (15 2/3” ) from the ground to the underside of your thigh when you sit on the sofa is a comfortable height. As the foam in your sofa ages it looses firmness and height, sagging and becoming uncomortable. Changing the foam in your seat cushions is another step you can take to extend the life of your sofa.

Some Italian designer sofas are only 30-35cm tall from new, and this can be difficult to get in and out of. In America they tend to have a preference for a taller overall sofa height of 45-50cm (17.5”-19.5").
